Languishing in a field of lavender, lying upon my back, I stare at a clear cerulean sky. I think of you. I think of all we have done, the things we have not. I think of all you have brought to my life, what I have taken from yours, all that has passed between us. I remember moments of laughter, tears of joy, those of pain as well. Moments of unimaginable bliss, happiness never deserved, yet found – shared – cherished.
Languishing in a field of lavender, lying upon my back, I watch the gnats buzz, the bees flit about, the curious flies that have begun to swarm. The sky is still, the field quiet, the echoes of sound only in my mind. I hear the remembered rustling as you walked away, your hesitation, your mournful cry. So brave, so kind, my understanding savior. I know it was a world of anguish for you to do this, but it was the only choice.
Languishing in a field of lavender, lying upon my back, my chest no longer heaves, my blood no longer seeps, a calm serenity has taken over my thoughts. A white cloud drifts by on my cerulean sky, a dog sniffs my hand. No, not yet. Let me watch the sky a little longer – just until my eyes cloud over…

She’s dying, I get that. Is her former lover a vampire who embraced her?

No, she is already dead from the onset. It’s her soul that is experiencing all she describes; her soul wants a few moments more before it has to depart for another existence. He was a simply a man who loved her enough not to watch her suffer, and helped her fulfill her wish to end her torment. Unable to do so by her own hand, she relies on him to be not only her executioner, but her true savior.
A fairly tragic little spin, one that honors choice above all. It grants her freedom from a greater suffering, and displays his devotion to suffer for her by sparing her any additional pain. I suppose I’m a bit of a romantic Dark Angel after all. Even if it’s a twisted sort of romance. 😉

This was very cool. I love the way you kept bringing the reader back to the field of lavender. It reminded me of lilacs and childhood and an ease or peacefulness, like taking a deep breath on a walk; when there is nothing to lose, only a world to enjoy. You really captured this for me in ‘Languishing’.

Thank you, Jaimie! I’m glad you enjoyed it so much. In my mind, it was important to reinforce that the soul could only enjoy this last bit of its existence if it remained tethered to the body, thus the repetition of Languishing in a field of lavender… I’m very happy you liked it!

Lovely tale, my talented friend. I believe I’ll never view lavender in quite the same light.

Thank you, Blaze! As odd as it might sound, I’ve always associated lavender with death. Something about it makes it seem more peaceful in my mind. 🙂

Thank you, Joe! It was one of those out-of-the-blue rambles, I sat down and once the word ‘lavender’ popped into my head, it knew exactly where it wanted to go. 😉

Wow, this is really touching. I also liked how you brought the reader back to the lavender. I am glad that you interpreted it in the first comment.
Thanks for checking out my AtoZ.

Hi Rhonda! Thanks for visiting my little ramble and appreciating it! I usually prefer to hear the reader’s interpretation of a piece, but this one deserved an explanation. 🙂

Actually, I read mostly Horror, SciFi & Other World. If it doesn’t have a touch of the odd to it, its not my normal read. I don’t really write anything along the lines of my preferred author’s styles. This is just me 🙂
